What is a colorized coin?

The Royal Canadian Mint was the first to produce a colorized circulating coin, the 25-cent coin, in 2004. Coins are colorized by methods such as applying a “sticker” to the surface, adding ink or paint through a computerized “printing” process, or enameling by filling recessed areas with paint.

What is a toned coin?

Toned coins are the result of a chemical process that reacts with the surface metal of a coin. Although any coin can tone, silver and copper coins are most susceptible to the toning process. United States Gold coins, on the other hand, are the least susceptible. However, these gold coins can still take on subtle shades of toning as they get older.

Does the United States Mint Make colorized coins?

In 2020, the United States Mint issued its first colorized coins as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program. The United States Mint has never produced or sold colorized coins or coins that feature a holographic or superimposed image. Does the United States Mint produce or sell gold- or silver-plated coins? No.

Can a coin be altered after it has been issued?

The United States Mint does not encourage or support the alteration of coins after they have been issued. Congress itself mandates by statute the themes, images, and inscriptions that appear on a particular coin.
